FOR “defaming and insulting the administrative bodies of the state”, the president of the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression, Mazen Darwish, was recently sentenced to a salutary ten days in jail. His real crime was to report on riots in an industrial town near Damascus, Syria’s capital. What many people still don’t know, what is buried in this story, is that Islamists (Muslims) have a hard time with freedoms of speech in Arab lands. What people will realize, probably when it is too late, is that there is a conflict with people who want religious identity over secularist identity. It’s not a conflict about Islam and the rest; but the religious Muslims, Christians, Jews, etc. against the non-practicing follower who seems to have sided with those who claim there is no religion. Those in power in the West are simply using Islam as a scapegoat.
